He captured noteworthy images of Native Americans, both dignified portraiture and important images of the Native lifestyle. Of particular significance is his visual documentation of the hunt and slaughter of the bison on the plains, before their near extermination.

Laton Alton Huffman, commonly known as "L.A," was born in Iowa in 1843. He apprenticed under F. Jay Haynes in Minnesota in 1878. He settled in eastern Montana at Miles City, where he started out working as post photographer at Fort Keough in 1879. He was later elected to the the Montana House of Representatives. He worked briefly out of Billings before returning to Miles City. He passed away in 1931.

Huffman's images of cattle ranchers, bison hunting, and Native Americans remain a rare window into those aspects of 19th century life on the frontier.
